Running stars will shine at the AACR Philadelphia Marathon’s 25th Anniversary celebration!
PHILADELPHIA, PA - To celebrate its 25th anniversary, the AACR Philadelphia Marathon will welcome three legendary marathon runners to the festivities this year.
Considered one of the greatest runners of our time, Meb Keflezighi (pronounced Kef-lez-ghee) is the only athlete in history to win the New York Marathon, the Boston Marathon and an Olympic medal. Meb has dedicated his life to inspiring others to achieve their best in athletics as well as in their lives, and he believes that real victory lies in balancing a healthy, active life that focuses on education, community and a strong moral fabric. A popular motivational speaker, Meb will be presenting at the AACR Philadelphia Marathon Health and Fitness Expo, which is open and free to the public, at the Philadelphia Convention Center. Attendees will also have the opportunity to chat during a book signing of his best seller, Run to Overcome.
Neither torrential rain nor wicked headwinds stopped Desiree Linden from becoming the first women’s champion at the Boston Marathon since 1985 earlier this year. Her win shattered records as she not only bested the field, but she did so in the worst weather conditions in Boston Marathon history. Since 2011 Des has participated in several top marathons around the country, and has been a member of the U.S Team at the Olympics and Pan-Am Games, as well as a runner at four of the six World Marathon Majors, winning numerous medals and accolades. She is considered one of the top runners in America today, and has broken many records along the way. Des will also be a presenter at the AACR Philadelphia Marathon Health and Fitness Expo, where she will share her indomitable spirit and enthusiasm.
“We are thrilled and honored to have these iconic athletes join us to help celebrate our milestone year at the AACR Philadelphia Marathon,” said Leo Dignam, Assistant Managing Director of the City of Philadelphia. He added, “Meb and Des will be leading a marathon shake out run on Saturday, and they will also be visiting our VIP tent both days during the weekend.”
Fan favorite, Bill Rodgers, will be greeting runners and spectators throughout the weekend, imparting his special brand of fun and motivation at the starting lines. Known as “Marathon Man”, Rodgers is a four-time winner of the Boston Marathon and the New York Marathon, in addition to winning the 1974 Philadelphia Marathon. He has appeared at several Philadelphia Marathon weekends in years past.
Over 30,000 runners, 60,000 spectators, and thousands of volunteers attend the Philadelphia Marathon Weekend every year. Rated one of the top ten marathons in the country, it is celebrating its 25th year as a prime destination for both athletes and history buffs.
