2024 Philadelphia Marathon, Half Marathon and 8K Sold Out with Record Registration Numbers; Nemours Children’s Run Still Open
Updated 8K race route, expanded Children’s Zone and new Open Division added to this year’s Marathon Weekend experience
PHILADELPHIA, PA – The City of Philadelphia and Philadelphia Marathon Weekend organizers are excited to announce that registration for the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Philadelphia Marathon, Dietz & Watson Half Marathon, and Rothman Orthopaedics 8K have officially sold out for this year’s race weekend happening November 22-24, 2024; registration is now closed. This is the earliest that all races have filled to capacity in the 31 years that the marathon has been taking place, and nearly two months earlier than last year’s sell-out date.
“It’s exciting to see the growth and popularity of our marathon over the last several years,” said David G. Wilson, Deputy Managing Director for General Services, City of Philadelphia. “We’ve invested a lot of time and effort with our sponsor partners to make all of the events a positive experience and to welcome visitors coming to Philadelphia for the weekend.”
Earlier this year, voters in the USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards named the Dietz & Watson Philadelphia Half Marathon as one of their Top 10 Best Half Marathons.
This year’s race weekend will start with the Health and Wellness Expo on Friday, November 22, 2024, the Rothman Orthopaedics 8K and Dietz & Watson Philadelphia Half Marathon taking place on Saturday, November 23, 2024, and concluding on Sunday, November 24, 2024, with the Nemours Children’s Run and AACR Philadelphia Marathon. Registration closed with:
- 17,000 participants for the AACR Philadelphia Marathon*.
- 15,000 participants for the Dietz & Watson Half Marathon.
- 5,000 participants for the Rothman Orthopaedics 8K.
* This year, there are 2,000 more registrations for the AACR Philadelphia Marathon than 2023.
In addition to this year’s Marathon Weekend being the largest anticipated attendance in race history, there is an updated race route for the Rothman 8K and additional programming for children on both Saturday and Sunday in the expanded Children’s Zone.
The Nemours Children’s Run will now take place Sunday, November 24, 2024, at 10 a.m. in an effort to spread out the events of the weekend and the flow of runners and spectators at Eakin’s Oval. The minimum age has been changed to four. The Children’s Zone will now take place at Von Colln Field (located just north of the Full and Half Marathon Start Line). Children’s Zone events are open to all, however space is limited for children ages 4-12 years old to participate in the Nemours Children’s Run, so families are encouraged to register in advance. Last month, The City of Philadelphia and Philadelphia Marathon Weekend announced there will now be prize money and awards for the top finishers in the new Open Division across the three gender categories (Men’s, Women’s, and Nonbinary). This will be the first year in the history of the Philadelphia Marathon that participating non-professional athletes can compete to win prize money as top finishers. In the past, the first Philadelphian and first Masters (runners over 40 years of age) to complete the races received prize money. This change expands opportunities for local and non-professional athletes to receive cash awards.
