Legendary Runners Return to Support The Philadelphia Marathon Weekend Runners!

The Philadelphia Marathon Weekend welcomes back top runners Meb Keflezighi and Desiree Liden as they offer their support to all participants

PHILADELPHIA, PA (October 1, 2019) – We are just eight weeks away from the historic Philadelphia Marathon Weekend where 30,000 runners will be taking on the 26.2-mile challenge that routes through the heart of Philadelphia and includes some of the most iconic landmarks. This beautiful and scenic course has been consistently listed as one of the top ten courses in the country. The weekend begins with the Dietz & Watson Philadelphia Half Marathon, the Rothman 8K run, and the Dunkin’ Munchkin’ Run on Saturday, Nov. 23. The full AACR Philadelphia Marathon will be held on Sunday, Nov. 24 to round out the weekend. Runners will meet at 7:00 a.m. at 22nd Street & Benjamin Franklin Parkway, near the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Along with the 60,000 spectators, and thousands of volunteers who attend the Philadelphia Marathon Weekend every year, two top running champions, Meb Keflezighi, and Desiree Linden will be returning to Philadelphia to offer their support and encouragement.

Considered one of the greatest runners of our time, Meb Keflezighi (pronounced Kef-lez-ghee) is the only athlete in history to win the New York Marathon, the Boston Marathon and an Olympic medal. Meb has claimed four NCAA championships, 23 National Championships and a place on four United States Olympic teams. None of these achievements came easily: only his resilience, determination and faith led Meb to prevail following some of life’s most challenging and heart-breaking circumstances. Transcending his own athletic achievements, Meb maintains an unwavering commitment to helping others go the distance in their own lives—physically, professionally, personally and spiritually. Every day, Meb inspires individuals of all ages and athletic abilities to achieve their own personal best. He hopes to spread this inspiration and offer his advice to runners on Saturday, November 23, 2019, at the Dietz & Watson Philadelphia Half Marathon, and the Rothman Orthopaedics 8K. In his latest book titled "26 Marathons - What I learned about Faith, Identity, Running, and Life from My Marathon Career," Meb talks about the pros and cons of each marathon he has participated in and gives personal advice about what he has learned from them.

"Last year was my first AACR Philadelphia Marathon, and I am thrilled to return in 2019,” said Meb Keflezighi. "The historic, runner-friendly course and energetic spectators promise a great experience and fast times for those ready to attack personal bests, and you can even pause for a quick selfie at the Rocky Statue!" He added, "I recommend everyone try a famous Philly Cheesesteak, though you may want to wait until after your race. See you in Philly!"

First place winner in the 2018 Rock N Roll Philly Half Marathon and two-time U.S. Olympic Marathoner, Desiree Linden, will also be attending this year’s Philadelphia Marathon Weekend on Saturday, November 23, 2019. Desiree became the first women’s champion at the 2018 Boston Marathon since 1985. Her win shattered records as she not only bested the field, but she did so in the worst weather conditions in Boston Marathon history. Since 2011 Des has participated in several top marathons around the country and has several tips and tricks for runners on how to master the marathon.

"I am excited to be returning to Philly for the AACR Philadelphia Marathon again this November. Last year's event was fantastic, whether you're running the marathon, the half, the 8k, Kid's Race, or the Corporate Challenge there's something for everyone. Hope to see you all there."

The first five marathon finishers will be awarded prize money and all finishers will receive a medal and certificate. After the marathon is completed, all runners will be able to spend time in our vendor village and enjoy post-race refreshments.
